Bridal Upstyles By Bellus
Bridal Upstyles
A bridal upstyle does something no other style quite manages — it lifts the whole look. The neckline opens up. The earrings become a feature. The back
of the gown is finally fully visible. The entire silhouette becomes something considered and complete and the satisfaction of
a perfectly crafted updo on a bride’s wedding morning never gets old.
The Full Spectrum of Bridal Upstyles
When most people think of a bridal upstyle, they picture a chignon — the classic, gathered style at the nape of the neck that has been a bridal staple for generations. And the chignon is genuinely beautiful. But it’s just one option within a world of upswept bridal styles that ranges from sleek and architectural to soft and romantic, from minimalist to intricate, from timeless to deeply contemporary.
An upstyle, in the broadest sense, is any style where the majority of the hair is swept up and away from the shoulders and neck. Within that definition,
the variation is extraordinary — and the right upstyle for you depends on your personal aesthetic, the back of your gown, your accessories, the formality of your venue, and the feeling you want to carry through your day.

Bridal Upstyle Variations — Finding Your Perfect Look
The Classic Chignon
The chignon is the foundation of bridal upstyles — a gathered, coiled style positioned at the nape of the neck that has been beloved by brides for generations. And it remains beloved because it works. It’s flattering on almost every face shape, it complements almost every gown, and it carries a quiet elegance that doesn’t date. Within the chignon family there’s significant variation: sleek and smooth for a polished, modern finish; softly textured with visible wrapping and movement; adorned with accessories for added detail; or braided for a more romantic, handcrafted quality. The chignon is versatile enough to suit a garden ceremony and a formal ballroom in equal measure.
The French Twist
The French twist is one of the most iconic bridal styles in existence — a vertically swept upstyle where the hair is gathered and tucked into a sleek fold at the back of the head. Historically formal and precise, the French twist has been beautifully reimagined for contemporary brides — with added volume through the crown, subtle texture within the twist, and sometimes braided or romantic details that soften the original silhouette. It suits strapless and off-the-shoulder gowns especially well, and it has an editorial quality in photographs that’s hard to replicate with softer styles.
The High Updo
Gathering the hair at the crown rather than the nape creates height and elongates the silhouette — and the effect is genuinely regal. High updos suit brides who love a more dramatic, statement-making style, and they pair beautifully with tiaras, veils positioned at the crown, and strapless or structured gowns. Within the high updo category, there are smooth, sculptural versions and softer, more romantic versions — the choice between them is one of the most interesting conversations I have at trials.
The Low Updo (above the nape)
Positioned at the mid-back of the head — above the nape but lower than the crown — the low updo creates a classically elegant silhouette that suits formal venues and traditional gowns with particular grace. It’s distinct from the low bun in that it has more structure and shape — often featuring twisted or pinned sections rather than a simple coiled bun. This style has
a traditional bridal quality that some brides love precisely for that reason.
The Braided Updo
An updo constructed primarily from braided sections — twisted, coiled, and pinned into an intricate, entirely unique arrangement. No two braided updos I create look exactly the same. The variations in braid texture, direction, and placement mean the result is always personal. This style has a handcrafted quality that photographs with real depth and dimension, and it suits every venue from a bohemian outdoor ceremony to a formal heritage estate.
The Soft Twisted Updo
Sections of hair twisted and pinned in a flowing, directional arrangement — somewhere between a chignon and a French twist, with a deliberately romantic quality. The twists create visible movement within the structure of the style, giving it warmth and character that more severely smooth updos can sometimes lack. This is one of the most popular upstyles I create for brides who want to feel genuinely elegant without feeling stiff or formal.
The Romantic Gathered Updo
Not every updo needs to be neat. A romantically gathered style — where the hair is drawn up and arranged in a way that looks beautiful but intentionally soft — has a warmth and femininity that more structured options can miss. Loose tendrils escaping at the temples, organic texture through the gathered sections, softly arranged pieces that look touched rather than combed. This version feels genuinely personal, and it photographs with a warmth that I love.

Which One Suites?
Matching Your Upstyle to Your Wedding Dress
A deeply detailed back — buttons, lace, intricate beading — is shown off beautifully by a sleek, smooth upstyle that doesn’t compete with the detail. A chignon, French twist, or modern updo in a clean finish lets the gown do the talking.
A simple, clean-backed gown can carry more elaborate hair detail — a braided updo, a textured twisted style, or a gathered romantic arrangement adds visual interest above a gown that has it at the neckline and front rather than the back.
A backless or low-backed gown calls for an upstyle that sits entirely clear of the back — typically positioned at the nape or mid-head — so the full expanse of the exposed back is visible. This is also where earring choice becomes enormously important, which is something we can talk through at your trial.
Strapless and off-the-shoulder gowns are flattered by upstyles that create a clean, uncluttered line across the shoulders and collarbone — the French
twist and high updo both work particularly beautifully here.
FAQ
Bridal Upstyles — Frequently Asked Questions
What hair length do I need for a bridal upstyle?
Most upstyles work best with at least medium-length hair — collar bone length or longer gives the most options. For shorter hair, extensions can be incorporated. Very short hair can still be styled beautifully in a softer upswept arrangement. We'll assess your options at your trial.
Will an upstyle hold through a full wedding day and reception?
Yes — a properly constructed upstyle is one of the most durable choices in bridal hair. Properly pinned and finished with the right products, it should hold through ceremony, portraits, dinner, and dancing without slipping or losing its shape. We test the hold at your trial.
Can I wear an upstyle if my hair is very fine or thin?
Yes, though fine hair benefits from specific preparation — volumising product, a careful blowout, and sometimes clip-in extensions to add body to the gathered sections. We work through exactly the right approach at your trial.
How do I choose between a low chignon and a high updo?
The main considerations are the back of your gown, your accessories, and the feeling you want. High updos create height and drama and suit formal venues and gowns with open necklines or strapless bodices. Low chignons are more classic and understated — they let the gown breathe and are particularly beautiful with a veil. We can try both at your trial if you're undecided.
Can I have an upstyle and still wear a veil?
Absolutely — upstyles and veils are one of the most beautiful combinations in bridal styling. The positioning depends entirely on your specific style, and we work this out carefully at your trial.
Do you travel to my venue on my wedding morning?
Yes — I travel to your accommodation or venue across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, and the Central Coast. You get ready in the comfort of your own space, surrounded by your people.
