With 24 years as a hairstylist and 18 years of bridal-specific experience, I’ve styled hair for hundreds of brides across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and the Central Coast. I know what works in vineyard morning light. I know how to build a style that lasts from the ceremony through to the last dance. And I know how to make the getting-ready part of your morning feel calm, unhurried and genuinely enjoyable.

Finding Your Perfect Bridal Hairstyle

There’s no single right answer when it comes to bridal hair — only what’s right for you, your dress, your venue and the way you want to feel on the day. Here’s how I think about the main style families:

Upstyles

The classic choice for good reason. A beautifully finished bridal upstyle — whether that’s a sleek chignon, a softly textured updo or an intricate braided arrangement — keeps your hair off your face and neck all day, suits almost every dress neckline, and photographs exquisitely from every angle. Upstyles also hold exceptionally well in heat and humidity, which matters for outdoor ceremonies and long summer receptions.

Half-Up / Half-Down

The best of both worlds. Half-up styles let you enjoy the length and movement of your hair while keeping it controlled and elegant. I love a romantic half-up for brides who want something that feels a little undone — softly pinned, with loose face-framing pieces and gentle waves falling through the length. It works beautifully for garden ceremonies and vineyard settings.

For three consecutive years I’ve been named a Wedding Diaries Editor’s Choice Award winner across four regions. It’s an honour that reflects every bride who trusted me with their day.

Down Styles

Worn down doesn’t mean unstyled. Down bridal hair can be deeply glamorous — think full, bouncy waves, a sleek polished blow-dry, or softly defined curls with real movement. The key is preparation: your hair needs to be in excellent condition, and the right products need to be used at the right stage to ensure the style holds from early morning through to late evening.

Soft Bridal Waves

Soft, flowing waves are one of the most requested bridal styles I create — and they suit almost every bride, every face shape, and every setting. Whether you’re drawn to loose, beachy movement or something more polished and defined, waves have a natural ability to feel both effortless and genuinely romantic at the same time. They move beautifully through ceremony and portraits, and they
photograph in the most flattering way — the movement catching light in a way that flat styles simply can’t replicate.

Hollywood Waves

For the bride who wants genuine glamour — polished, structured, and unmistakably beautiful — Hollywood waves bring a red-carpet quality to a wedding look that no other style quite matches. Deep, defined waves set with precision and finished with a gloss spray, Hollywood waves suit off-the- shoulder and strapless gowns beautifully and pair perfectly with statement earrings and a classic veil. This is the style that photographs like a film still. Elegant. Timeless. Completely striking.

Bridal Braids & Boho Hair

Braids have had a serious moment in bridal hair over the last few years — and they’re showing no sign of slowing. From a delicate fishtail woven through the back of an updo to a full bohemian crown braid wound with wildflowers, braided styles bring texture, character, and a handcrafted quality to bridal hair that’s unlike anything else. I especially love creating braided styles for outdoor and vineyard weddings — there’s something about the texture and romance of braided hair that feels perfectly at home against a backdrop of grapevines and golden afternoon light.

Bohemian Bridal Hair

Not every bride wants a structured, formal style — and that’s exactly right. Bohemian bridal hair celebrates softness, texture, and an effortless natural beauty that feels completely at home at outdoor ceremonies, garden weddings, and vineyard settings across the Hunter Valley and beyond. Loose waves with face-framing pieces, relaxed braided crowns, flowing down styles with flowers tucked through — boho bridal hair is endlessly varied and endlessly romantic. If your dress has lace, your venue has vines, and you’ve been pinning flower crowns since you got engaged, this style was made for you.

The Finishing Touches

Hair Accessories — Getting It Right

The right bridal hair accessory can take a beautiful hairstyle to something truly unforgettable. The wrong one can fight with it. Here’s my honest advice on the most common choices:

  • Veils — The veil placement and attachment point must be decided before your trial, not after. Whether you’re wearing a cathedral veil, a blusher or a simple elbow-length style, I’ll position and secure it so it stays put all day and comes away cleanly when you’re ready.
  • Combs & pins — Vintage brooches, pearl-tipped pins and jewelled combs work beautifully in upstyles and half-up styles. Bring them to your trial so we can test placement.
  • Headbands & vines — Delicate gold or floral headbands suit bohemian and garden wedding styles. They need to be properly anchored or they shift. I’ll show you exactly how to wear yours.
  • Flower crowns — Fresh flowers need to be sourced from your florist and added on the morning. Dried flower crowns can come to your trial. Either way, the crown needs to fit your head properly — bring it early.
  • Tiaras — Require a solid structure underneath to attach to. If you’re wearing a tiara, tell me at enquiry stage so we can plan the base style around it.

Preparation

Pre-Wedding Bridal Hair Care

The single biggest factor in how your bridal hair looks on the day isn’t my skill — it’s the condition your hair arrives in. Here’s what I recommend to every bride I work with:

  • Book a trim 6–8 weeks before the wedding, not the week before. You want any freshly cut ends to have settled.
  • If you colour your hair, schedule your last colour appointment 2–3 weeks out. Freshly coloured hair can be silky and difficult to hold; hair that’s a couple of weeks past colour takes product and holds style better.
  • Deep condition weekly in the 6 weeks leading up to the wedding. Healthy, hydrated hair holds style longer and behaves more predictably.
  • Avoid trying new products or treatments in the final month. Anything that changes your hair’s texture close to the wedding is a risk.
  • On the morning itself, arrive with hair freshly washed and completely dry unless I’ve advised you otherwise. Do not apply any products before I arrive.

The Trial

Your Bridal Hair Trial

The trial is so important. It’s where we figure out exactly what your hair can do, what it needs to do it, and how long it takes — so that on the morning of your wedding, there are no surprises and no wasted time.

We’ll meet at a time and location that suits you, and I’ll style your hair in the look you’re considering for the wedding. Bring reference images — the more specific the better. Bring your veil or any accessories you plan to wear. If you can wear a top with a similar neckline to your dress, even better.

The trial is also when I get to know your hair personally — its texture, its weight, how it responds to heat, how long it holds. Every bride’s hair is different and every style needs to be adapted to the specific person wearing it, not just copied from a photo.

Bridal Hair trial cost is $150. The trial fee is separate from your wedding day booking.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book my bridal hair?

I’d recommend enquiring 12–18 months ahead if your wedding date is during peak season — October through April in particular books very quickly across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens. That said, if your date is sooner, it’s always worth getting in touch. I do sometimes have last-minute availability and I’ll always be upfront with you about whether I can take your booking.

Do you travel to my venue to do my hair?

Yes — I come to you. I travel to venues, hotels, vineyard villas and private residences across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and the Central Coast. There’s no need for you to travel anywhere on your wedding morning. Your getting-ready experience is entirely on-site.

Can you do hair for my whole bridal party, not just me?

Absolutely. For smaller parties of up to four or five people I work solo. For larger groups I bring in trusted assistants so that everyone is finished on time without the morning feeling rushed. Tell me your party size when you enquire and I’ll let you know exactly how I’d structure the morning.

Do I need a trial?

I strongly recommend it for every bride. The trial is where we work out the exact style, the technique, the products and the timing — so the wedding morning runs like clockwork. It’s also your chance to make adjustments without any pressure. Brides who skip the trial sometimes get lucky, but it’s a risk I wouldn’t personally take with something as important as your wedding day.

What should I do with my hair on the morning of the wedding?

Arrive with your hair freshly washed and completely dry. No products — no dry shampoo, no serums, no styling sprays. I’ll bring everything needed. If your hair needs to be prepped differently for a specific style, I’ll tell you at the trial.

Can you do both my hair and my makeup?

Yes — and for most of my brides, that’s exactly what I do. Combining hair and makeup with one artist means one trial, one point of contact, a more relaxed morning and a cohesive finished look. Take a look at my bridal makeup page if you’d like to know more about what that involves.
