Finding Your Perfect Bridal Hairstyle

A guide to Finding Your Perfect Bridal Hairstyle – upstyles, half-up styles, down styles, accessories and everything in between.

One of the questions I get most often from brides is some version of: How do I know which hairstyle is right for me?…” through to “Here’s what I know.

What Makes a Great Bridal Hairstyle?

A great bridal hairstyle does five things: it reflects who you are, it works with your dress (not against it), it suits the setting and season, it makes you feel confident, and it lasts. That last one is non-negotiable. You need a style that looks as good in the last photo of the night as it does in the first one of the morning. Professional techniques and products make that possible — but the style itself needs to be chosen with longevity in mind too.

Bridal Upstyles

Upstyles are the most versatile category of bridal hair, and they remain consistently popular for good reason. Here are the most requested styles I create:

The Chignon

A low chignon at the nape of the neck is one of the most timeless bridal choices there is. It’s clean, it’s elegant, and it works beautifully with veils and decorative hairpins. If you have an open-back dress, a chignon is often the obvious answer — it draws attention to one of the best features of your gown.

The Messy Updo

Despite the name, a good messy updo takes real skill to create. Loose, textured, with pieces falling softly around the face — it’s the perfect choice for outdoor and garden weddings, bohemian aesthetics, and brides who want something that feels effortless rather than structured. I use texturizing spray to create that beautiful undone quality while making sure the style actually holds all day.

The Braided Updo

Braids woven into an updo add detail, texture and artistry that photographs incredibly well. This style bridges the gap between traditional and bohemian — it feels romantic and handcrafted without being too casual. Hunter Valley vineyard brides in particular tend to love a braided updo.

Half-Up, Half-Down Styles

Half-up styles are having a real moment right now, and I love working with them. They give you the elegance of an upstyle while keeping the length and movement of your hair visible. A few variations I create regularly:

  • Curly half-up — romantic, soft curls with the top section pinned back; beautiful for spring and outdoor weddings
  • Sleek half-up — contemporary, polished, with smooth straight hair in the upper section; perfect for modern venues
  • Braided half-up — a fishtail, Dutch or waterfall braid in the upper section with the rest flowing freely; effortlessly boho

Down Hairstyles

Wearing your hair down on your wedding day is absolutely possible — and for the right bride in the right setting, it’s stunning. The key is choosing the right style for your hair type and making sure it’s set to last.

  • Loose waves — the most requested down style; beachy, carefree and romantic; ideal for coastal and outdoor weddings
  • Straight and sleek — modern and striking; works best with fine to medium hair using quality straighteners and anti-frizz products
  • Curls and volume — timeless Hollywood glamour; created with curling irons or rollers and set with product for longevity

Hair Accessories and Veils

The right accessory elevates a hairstyle from beautiful to extraordinary. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Tiaras — traditional and striking; balance a round face beautifully
  • Combs and pins — versatile, from subtle to ornate; can be scattered through an updo or used as a single statement piece
  • Headbands — adorned with beads, rhinestones or florals; suit both bohemian and formal aesthetics
  • Veils — from short blusher length to long cathedral; should be chosen in relation to your hairstyle as much as your dress

My general advice: if your dress has a lot of intricate detail, keep your accessories simpler. If your dress is minimalist, your hair accessories can do more of the work.

Getting Your Hair Wedding-Ready

  • Regular trims — every 6–8 weeks in the lead-up to your wedding keeps ends healthy and your style looking intentional
  • Hair masks — a hydrating mask once a week in the months before will make a noticeable difference in texture and shine
  • Limit heat styling — in the weeks before your wedding, let your hair rest as much as possible
  • Eat well and drink water — hair health really does start from the inside
  • Come to your trial with clean, dry, product-free hair — this gives me the best base to work from
