Glowing Skin Tips from a Hunter Valley Makeup Artist
The brides whose skin photographs best aren’t always those with the most perfect complexions — they’re the ones who prepared properly.

Every bride wants glowing skin on her wedding day. And I mean really glowing — not the kind that comes from a highlighter brush, but the kind that comes from genuinely healthy, hydrated, well-cared-for skin underneath the makeup. As a bridal makeup artist working across the Hunter Valley and Newcastle for over 18 years, I can tell you with certainty: the brides whose skin photographs best aren’t always the ones with the most “perfect” complexions. They’re the ones who prepared properly. Here’s how.
Step 1: Build a Consistent Skincare Routine
Start this at least 8–12 weeks before your wedding, not the week before. Skin takes time to respond to a new routine — and you don’t want to be introducing new products close to the date and risk a reaction.
Cleansing
Gentle daily cleansing — morning and night — is the foundation of everything. Choose a cleanser suited to your skin type, massage it in with your fingertips rather than a rough cloth, and rinse thoroughly. This step removes impurities, excess oil and makeup residue and gives the rest of your routine the best chance to work.
Exfoliation
Regular exfoliation — two to three times a week — removes dead skin cells and reveals the fresher, more luminous skin beneath. Look for gentle chemical exfoliants with fruit enzymes or low-percentage acids (lactic or glycolic) rather than harsh physical scrubs. The goal is smooth, even skin texture, not irritated redness.
Moisturiser
Well-moisturised skin holds makeup better, looks plumper and more radiant, and photographs with that beautiful dewy quality every bride is after. Find a moisturiser suited to your skin type and use it consistently, morning and night.
Sunscreen
Non-negotiable. Daily SPF is the single most effective thing you can do for long-term skin health and — relevantly for brides — for maintaining an even, bright complexion in the lead-up to your wedding. UV damage causes uneven pigmentation and dullness. Protect your investment.
Step 2: Feed Your Skin From the Inside
What you eat genuinely shows on your skin — and in the months before your wedding, what you eat matters more than usual.
- Berries and leafy greens — packed with antioxidants that protect against free radical damage and help maintain skin clarity
- Omega-3 fatty acids — found in salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds; essential for maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier and reducing inflammation
- Collagen-supporting foods — bone broth, citrus fruits and soy support your skin’s natural collagen production
- Water — genuinely the most underrated skincare ingredient. Aim for 2–3 litres a day and watch what it does to your skin over six to eight weeks
Step 3: Lifestyle Matters Too
This sounds basic, but the brides who come to me with the most consistently beautiful skin are usually the ones who sleep well, manage their stress and don’t smoke.
- Sleep — your skin does most of its repair work overnight. Protecting your sleep in the weeks before your wedding is genuinely one of the best things you can do for your appearance.
- Stress management — whatever works for you: walking, yoga, meditation, switching off your phone for an hour. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which directly impacts skin quality.
- Avoid smoking — if you do smoke, reducing or stopping in the lead-up to your wedding will make a visible difference to your skin tone and texture.
Step 4: Makeup That Enhances Your Natural Glow
Once your skin is in good shape, the makeup is the finishing touch — not the foundation of the whole look. Here’s what creates that luminous, glowing bridal finish:
- Start with a hydrating primer to create a smooth, plump base
- Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone precisely — a shade too light or too dark shows immediately in photographs
- Use cream-based products where possible — they blend into the skin rather than sitting on top of it
- Apply highlighter to the high points of the face to catch the light naturally
- Keep the overall effect luminous, not matte — matte makeup tends to look flat and heavy in photographs
Glowing skin isn’t a trend — it’s the result of consistent, thoughtful care over time. Start early, be patient, and by the time your wedding morning arrives, your skin will be the best foundation I could ask for.
