After years of working with brides’ hair, I’ve noticed that the ones who sit down in my chair with genuinely healthy hair — strong, shiny, not over-processed — have so many more options available to them. Healthy hair holds styles better, blends with hair extensions more naturally and photographs with a vibrancy that no product can fake. If your wedding is coming up, here’s how to get your hair in the best possible shape before the big day.

1. Your Bridal Hair Care Routine

Choosing the Right Shampoo

The single most common mistake I see is brides using the wrong shampoo for their hair type. Fine hair needs a lightweight, volumising formula; thick or coarse hair benefits from a moisturising, smoothing shampoo; colour-treated hair needs something specifically formulated to protect the colour. Take the time to find the right match — it makes a genuine difference to how your hair behaves day to day.

When you shampoo, massage gently with your fingertips (not your nails) in slow circular motions to stimulate blood circulation to the scalp. Rinse thoroughly — leftover product residue is a common cause of dullness and flatness.

Conditioning Properly

Conditioner should be applied from mid-length to ends — not to the scalp, which can cause greasiness and weigh fine hair down. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing to allow proper penetration. A good conditioner detangles, softens and significantly reduces breakage during styling.

Protecting from Heat

In the months before your wedding, minimise heat styling as much as possible to preserve the integrity of your hair. When you do use heat tools, always apply a heat protectant spray first — it creates a layer of protection that significantly reduces damage from straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers.

2. Feed Your Hair Well

Hair health starts with nutrition. These three foods in particular make a noticeable difference:

  • Eggs — rich in protein and biotin, both essential for healthy hair growth and strength
  • Spinach — a source of iron, vitamin A and vitamin C, all of which support a healthy scalp and promote hair growth
  • Salmon — high in omega-3 fatty acids, which keep the scalp hydrated and help maintain the hair’s natural lustre

Beyond specific foods, general good nutrition and adequate hydration make a visible difference to hair quality over time. Start eight to twelve weeks before your wedding and the results will be there on the day.

3. Lifestyle Changes That Help

  • Prioritise sleep — your body (including your hair) repairs itself overnight, and sleep deprivation affects hair health more than most people realise
  • Manage stress — elevated cortisol is directly linked to hair shedding and changes in hair texture; find whatever works for you to keep stress manageable in the lead-up to the wedding
  • If you smoke, consider reducing or stopping — smoking restricts blood flow to the scalp and is associated with premature hair ageing and weakening

4. Hair Care for Your Hair Type

Curly Hair

Use a sulfate-free shampoo and a rich conditioner. Detangle while wet — never brush dry curls. Let your hair air-dry or use a diffuser on low heat to maintain curl definition without creating frizz.

Straight Hair

Volumising shampoo and a lightweight conditioner help prevent flatness. Avoid heavy creams or oils close to the roots. Choose products that maintain your hair’s natural flow without weighing it down.

Wavy Hair

A curl-enhancing shampoo and conditioner will help define your waves without stripping them. Minimise heat styling, which tends to either straighten or frizz wavy hair. Air-dry where possible, or scrunch with a microfibre towel for more defined waves.

Fine Hair

Stick to lightweight, volumising products throughout. Avoid anything that promises “nourishment” for the full length of the hair — heavy products on fine hair create limpness and greasiness almost immediately. Build volume at the root and keep the rest light.

5. Common Problems and Solutions

  • Dandruff — use an anti-dandruff shampoo containing zinc pyrithione or salicylic acid consistently for several weeks; most dandruff responds well to these ingredients
  • Split ends — there is no product that actually repairs split ends; the only solution is a trim. Book regular trims every 6–8 weeks to keep your ends healthy
  • Frizz — apply a smoothing serum or a few drops of hair oil to the mid-lengths and ends on damp hair before drying; avoid touching the hair while it dries

The best time to start all of this is right now — the earlier you begin, the better your hair will be on the morning I arrive. And when your hair is in great condition, the styles we can create together are genuinely extraordinary.
